Amy Lee Coy is on fire!

Dr. Drew Pinsky’s Authoritarian Approach to Charlie Sheen

I don’t normally go after people but Dr. Drew Pinsky is saying things that are so offensive and destructive that I am making an exception.

In the name of love and all the people who have been misled, mislabeled and mistreated by the disabling beliefs of the addiction-recovery-treatment industry–I’m calling names. And right now I’m calling out some of my least favorite company, Dr. Drew Pinsky and kind.

In a recent video with hollywoodlife.com, Dr. Drew Pinsky discusses Charlie Sheen (sprinkled with condescending head nods and ending in smug amusement because the fate of someone’s life is such a funny subject): “Whether it’s drug induced or drug withdrawal or whether he has bipolar disorder, I don’t know but right now he’s manic. That’s an acute psychiatric emergency. Bipolar patients that are manic are more likely to kill themselves or hurt themselves than when they’re depressed. So this is somebody who should be in the hospital.”

Note that Dr. Drew Pinsky is calling for the involuntary medical incarceration of someone who has not violated the law. If he wasn’t using medical terms to threaten someone’s liberty and to dehumanize them by refusing to respond to what they are saying, we would call this “libel.” But what is going on here is worse than slander because this kind of insensitive, uncaring, profit-oriented, social-control oriented behavior is destroying people’s lives.

Pinsky’s going after himself. He’s offering up his arse for a severe spanking. Perhaps it’s an attack of conscience.

  • AndyM

    Of the guilty variety.

just promoted to headline on opednews, yay!

  • Sugomom

    Yay is right.

  • Martha

Does anyone know how large of a readership Optednews has?

  • This is an EXCEPTIONAL ARTICLE! Dr. Slew SUCKS! *Stinkin-Thinkers UNITE!*

  • Martha

In the paragraph where she talks about Saint Bill she linked back to a post here.

  • causeandeffect

I loved this article and I would really love to read her book. I must get a copy. She definitely has courage that I admire.

  • I wanted to leave a comment on Amy’s post over on OpEdNews, but I got a little paranoid about the registration process — it’s pretty involved. But if any of you have an account over there, or aren’t feeling as neurotic as I am this evening, there’s an interesting comment over there that you might have fun responding to.

    Gunthar!! Thank you!:-)

  • Gunthar2000

Thank you! I’m reading your book and It’s so much about me!

That reminds me of Dr. Drew slandering Angelina Jolie last December: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/20/dr-drew-brad-pitt-and-ang_n_798940.html

By saying: “…There’s no such thing as ‘I was a heroin addict.’ That doesn’t exist in nature. Something is going on with [her] addiction. Or she’s in recovery. And I don’t see any evidence that’s the case.”

Three days later he was on his knees apologizing (though I would say that the damage was already done).

Sheen should insist on nothing less. He should sue him in fact. Pinsky is not his doctor and has never medically evaluated him. Someone really needs to stop that asshole.

  • “Someone really needs to stop that asshole.”

I think we just found the tag for our Dr. Drew series.

  • Martha

I have news for Pinsky. Not only is there such a thing as “I was a heroin addict.” There is also the reality of I WAS an alcoholic. If the Pinskys of this world had their way we would be required to where the label “alcoholic” for the rest of our lives. Happily AA does not get to call the shots for how we label ourselves. I quit drinking and that drinking again is not going to happen therefore I am no longer an alcoholic. Game over, Pinsky.

  • causeandeffect

    Martha, like a scarlet letter.

  • Mike

Pinsky is a prissy little pilgrim

  • causeandeffect

Gunthar is on fire!! He’s got my back in the comments over there. Go G!

Gunthar wrote in response to to a man who insists (among other things) that the essence of addiction is selfishness and egotism:

“Quitting drinking has nothing to do with selfishness, or ego, or any of that other wacky dacky AA mind-poop.

Just because you say something doesn’t mean it’s true my friend. There are plenty of selfish screwed up people out there who have never had a drink in their lives, and plenty of drunks out there who are the sweetest, least self-centered people you could ever meet in your life.

It would be interesting if you could somehow explain to everyone how an over inflated ego, or self-centeredness could cause someone to bend the elbow and put a drink to their lips… It might be easier to explain the correlation between stepping on the crack and breaking your mother’s back.

Addicts do not need to shift the entirety of the way they think. A radical shift from the philosophy that they are powerless to control their drinking may be in order, but beyond that there may be little that needs to change… Everyone is different… That’s what you crackpot cult members can’t seem to grasp… the idea that being an individual is one of the most beautiful things in this life. You freaks are always talking about miracles, but you insist on taking the one tangible miracle that alcoholics truly have away from them… the right to be themselves.

Each day I wake and see through these eyes… They are my eyes… my thoughts… my life… and I’ll be damned if I’ll allow a bunch of manipulative, angry religious freaks to take that away from me. I have broken free of the AA spell… I have pulled back the curtain and revealed that the wonderful wizard was nothing but a fraud. You and your kind have no control over me… I’m not the miserable reprehensible piece of crap that you tried to convince me I was. I am unique in every aspect… I am no longer a prisoner of AA.”

  • AnnaZed

Charlie counter-sued but to my amazement his lawyer does not mention his right not be forced into a religious cult as a prerequisite to being employed:

  • causeandeffect

Wow Gunthar. That was beautiful. I’m sorry I missed it where ever you posted that.

  • @AnnaZed – did you notice on the court document linked above that the defendants are collectively identified as “9th Step Productions”???? I have never heard this before. Could this be the missing link to AA that everyone is looking for?

  • AnnaZed

@JRHarris ~ I think that 9th Step Productions is a hold-over from when Charlie took a more optimistic view of AA and that now he’s stuck with it. Like many lavishly compensated talents he contracts through a production company of his own, not as an individual, though the production company produces nothing but his performances.

  • Hmmmm …. I looked it up and Charlie Sheen is the only officer. It would appear that he was heavily influenced by AA/NA at some time and let them into his life in a big way. I hope he didn’t name any of his kids Bill.
