Going Postal at Alcoholics Anonymous

Here is an interesting news story about guy in Portland, Maine; who was arrested yesterday for terrorizing, stalking his AA group, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a firearm in a school zone. Good times….good times. Sigh.

The arrested man, Herbert Jones (or Herbert J., as I will call him to protect his anonymity), made a reference to pedophiles being in the group. There were no convicted pedophiles at the meeting, although this guy may have heard a confession or two from those within the group. If that is the case, those pedophiles are protected from any AA confessions being used against them in court, as the courts have ruled AA to be a religious organization, and those confessions are like confessions given to any clergy. The guy could just be delusional, in which case I am surprised he left AA to begin with, as I would think it would be the perfect place for him.

I’m not sure how AA failed this guy. Maybe it was as simple as him doing something stupid, like making Rambo his higher power. Maybe he is just an over zealous 13th stepper who had heard one too many aphorism, and couldn’t take it anymore. Whatever the case, this guy fell well short of the promises offered to him in the ‘Big Book’. I’m surprised this kind of thing does not happen at meetings more often. Mixing together so many narcissistic egomaniacs and court appointed felons in one room is a lethal enough cocktail, and enough to make any self respecting wingnut go postal.

Apparently, he was delusional. This begs the question: If God was removing this guy’s shortcomings, why not start out with his bipolar disorder? Maybe he just didn’t make it to step 7, in which case I’ll give God a pass.

I got so tired of all of the crazy,criminal,.self-obsessed sickos in those meetings.I too am surprised there are not more incidents like this one.If people really knew what goes on in most AA meetings they would not be so quick to send their loved ones to AA.

Another update for you: The ruling that Cox's confessions were protected was overturned within months. http://www.nytimes.com/2002/07/18/nyregion/confes

Yeah, Ray. That was the right decision. Of course, they overturned it not because AA was deemed "not religious", but because the clergy privilege had not been established yet by this guy and those to whom he confessed.

The meetings are full of criminals and dirtbags. The speakers are boaring. The steps are impossible. It is a cult. AA sucks.

That's how it works!   That's what makes it a cult!  The  more dirt they get you to confide in them, the more they keep you coming back!….You're in, sworn to secrecy,  you become a trusted servant, they have you,  your time, and money to recruit more members.   They tell you that you can't get out or you'll end up dead…(and they mean it)..So you better damn well keep your mouth shut about anything you hear or see at the place…. An old timer confided in me and it's about time the real truth about the place comes out!

  • i FEEL like doing this sometimes. i am sorta kidding.  but lordy.  that group could wreck your life for good, worse than any speedball , alcohol blackout f-ed up situation you could get yourself into while using.  they are boiling frogs in there. slowly but surely.

For Gods sake get help…anywhere but AA…You do have power over your life, over your actions, over your choices.    #1 choice is where,  anywhere with a better success rate..and ANYTHING has a better success rate than AA.  Let the brainwashed serene zombies go about helping each other withe their meaningless lives.  That's the only place they feel important…among the other attention hungry, self-loving adulterers, so they can look down their snooty noses at the miserable wrecks they made out of the people who loved and stood by them.      Amends is out of the question, they're too busy with their new zombie friends, screwing one another and floating around on their clouds of serenity, blaming every ruthless disgusting action on God…because they have let go and let God take over their choices and lives…Ha Ha!  Cult, Cult…..The God I've always know has given me free will.
