How you, too, can have a "White Light" experience – just like Bill Wilson did

I found this post over at luvdrunk.org, a currently abandoned site to where Speedy referred us after FTG’s Rule #62 Challenge post. I thought this was particularly good, so I thought that I would re-post it here. There are some funny things on this site, and if you aren’t easily offended, I would suggest you go check it out. Particularly Corky The 12-Step Monkey. Anyway, here is the post:

Have you ever peered into the sky at night and wondered, “Hmmm, I wonder if there is a God?” Maybe you were raised in a church and went to Sunday school or Catholic School as a youngster. Maybe you even went to seminary, retreats, monasteries, or things like that..

Maybe God lives in the sky with a long white flowing beard? Maybe he is nature, ever trying to balance the eco-system. Maybe he is actually a she and wants Gloria Steinem to be her prophetess. Maybe God is just a natural force like in “Star Wars” and “The Empire Strikes Back.” Regardless of your conception or non conception of God, there is one man that was tied down in a psych-ward that has discovered the truth about God. His name was “Bill Wilson.”

Bill was a stock promoter who loved to drink like a sailor. Bill had many delusions of grandeur and fancied himself a stock promoting big shot. Little did Bill know that he was going to discover something much bigger than stocks and bonds, he was going to actually have an experience with GOD.

As most of you know, there was a massive stock crash in the 1930s and many lost many fortunes. Bill, being in the stock promoting business had lost his livelihood. While others decided to jump from very tall buildings. He was mentally shattered and descended further into his gin bottle, his only source of relief from the chaos of that time.

He decided to make drinking, which was his first love, his full-time profession. He let his wife, Lois; work at a Department Store in order to make ends meet. Now you may say, “Are you f***ing serious? This loser is a drunk, and his wife has to work in a department store to pay the bills? Well…. This may look like Lois is getting the short end of the stick, but Bill was about to meet GOD.

Bill ended up in a place called “Towns Hospital” which is where they put all the chronic drunks. According to Bill, while tied down like an insane donkey, had a DIVINE EXPERIENCE.

He describes it in his book As Bill Sees It Page 2:

“My depression deepened unbearably, and finally it seemed to me as though I were it seemed to me as though I were at the very bottom of the pit (being in a mental ward and tied down like a bail of hay). For the moment, the last vestige of my proud obstinacy was crushed. All at once I was crying out, “If there is a God, let him show Himself! I am ready to do anything, anything!”

Suddenly the room lit up with a great white light. It seemed to me; in the mind’s eye that I was on a mountain and that a wind not of air but of spirit was blowing. And then it burst upon me that I was a free man. Slowly the ecstasy subsided. I lay on the bed, but now for a time I was in another world, a new world of consciousness. All about me there was a wonderful feeling of Presence, and I thought to myself, “So this is the God of the preachers!”

Now you may be saying to yourself “Shit…. well Bill was chosen by Almighty God but I am just a regular Joe, why can’t I have a “White Light” experience, just like Bill did??”

Just ask this question at your next AA Meeting, I double dare you!!! And people will uncomfortably shuffle in their chairs and get another mug of coffee or go for a smoke. Even the “All-knowing” Old-Timers cannot answer this question, simply because they can’t.

It is High time to leave the bull***it behind, and become a freethinking, person free of addiction and groups filling you with malarkey. I would just put you in touch with the following websites that allow you to think for yourself instead of fill you will BS Dogma. Most also have chat sites you can participate in if you so choose:

I assume that you know that when this vision occurred Wilson was undergoing what Time Magazine called (curiously enough without further comment) "… a barbiturate-and-belladonna cure called "purge and puke," which was state-of-the-art alcoholism treatment at the time." :

That would make anyone see white-light; just ask Lou Reed.
